Lot Essay

The present work was probably executed en plein air on the occasion of Kensett's 1843 sketching expedition through England. Such trips were instrumental in Kensett's training, with the artist later recollecting, "My real life commenced there, in the study of the stately woods of Windsor, and the famous beeches of Burnham and the lovely and fascinating landscape that surrounds them." (as quoted in J.P. Driscoll, J.K. Howat, John Frederick Kensett: An American Master, exhibition catalogue, New York, 1985, p. 57)
