Lot Essay

This elegant finial is adorned with a broad belt formed of five twisted bands, a chevron-decorated sash tapering down her legs, two coiled bracelets on each arm, a beaded necklace, and a spherical striated headdress. Charles Gillet (1879–1972) was a French industrialist and entrepreneur who formed an impressive collection of ancient Greek, Roman, Egyptian and Near Eastern works of art and coins. His large collection was both dispersed amongst his family and sold on the market, with many works today in museums worldwide.
