Lot Essay

This seal is engraved with an interceding Lama goddess presenting a worshipper to a god before them. The goddess stands to the left with both arms raised, wearing a horned tiara and a long, flounced robe. Before her the worshipper extends both arms. He has a bare head and wears a fringed robe. To their right is the god, wearing a horned tiara and a creased robe, open at the front, with one leg projecting forward with the foot resting on a stool. Between the god and the worshipper is a combined lunar crescent and solar disc above and a crouching monkey below. Serving as the terminal is a three-line inscription in Elamite cuneiform reading, “Kuk-Narud, son of Shalulu, servant of Narude.”

For related Elamite seals, see nos. 1092-1094 in B. Buchanan, Early Near Eastern Seals in The Yale Babylonian Collection.
