Lot Essay

"A single flower rises from a pot to burst into bloom. The mood is joyous and the colours vibrant with blues, greens and touches of orange. The perspective from which the single plant is viewed, balanced on a corner table, imbues this picture with a personal touch. As important as the subject under scrutiny is the ambient Iight and the mood created by resonating colours. After attempting Still Life at the College of Art (1956) Pyne returns to them occasionally in the tempera technique, now using a brilliant palette" (G. Sen, Ganesh Pyne, Revelations, Calcutta, 1999, p. 82).
