Lot Essay
The present work depicts the fence on the edge of Burchfield's own yard. The same fence is featured in his 1937 watercolor, Two Fence Posts (Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois). In his journal, the artist recounts selling the present work: "Dinner with Dr. & Mrs. Bisharat at 'L'Aiglon' Rest[aurant]. He brought some of his work along which we looked at afterwards in my room. He returned the little picture of Bertha’s and bought 'Along the Fence in July'" (C.E. Burchfield, Journals, vol. LI, October 4, 1950, p. 105).
