Lot Essay

Launched as part of the Gondolo collection, this ravishingly beautiful Patek Philippe Reference 5076P cased in platinum is one of a rare series featuring artisan handmade cloisonné enamel dials decorated with tropical marine fish. Four different cloisonné dials were created for this series by Patek Philippe’s exceptionally talented craftsmen in the Rare Handicrafts Division. The dials depict different types of fish in a natural ocean setting. Each dial is unique in being handcrafted using gold wires to create cells (cloisons) filled with enamel paste and fired in a kiln at temperatures exceeding 800°C, a process that may be repeated up to 12 times per dial. Production was extremely limited, with only approximately 120 pieces of the reference made in total, usually in sets of four watches encompassing an array of enamel dial designs across various themes during its production run of around 3 years.

We are very pleased to offer this exceptional timepiece showcasing the work of the finest enamel artists who create these often unique and breathtaking miniaturized works of art.

Patek Philippe have harnessed and employed the talents of the best contemporary artists to very a great extent with the founding of the Rare Handicrafts division of the company to concentrate solely on the creation of entirely handmade unique masterpieces. The timepieces decorated by Patek Philippe’s Rare Handicrafts division have been so commercially successful that they are now a hugely important part of the company’s range and highly sought after by collectors, with each new release now eagerly anticipated. These formidable works of art speak for themselves and we hope that a wide audience will enjoy and appreciate the skills of these remarkable craftsmen, skills that are still very much alive today.
