Lot Essay

Cased appropriately in platinum, reference 3990P-010 features a breathtaking bezel set with 40 baguette-cut diamonds, totaling approximately 2.77 carats. The black dial is further adorned with 11 diamond hour markers, creating a striking contrast with the feuille (leaf-shaped) hands. The stepped case, with its elegant proportions and fluted case band, measures a timeless 36mm in diameter—a size that balances classical dress watch refinement with substantial wrist presence.

The perpetual calendar displays day, date, month, leap year, and moon phase through a harmonious and perfectly balanced arrangement of subsidiary dials: a 30-minute chronograph register and date aperture at 3 o'clock, a day and 12-hour register at 6 o'clock, a leap year indicator and moon phase at 9 o'clock, and a month aperture between 1 and 2 o'clock. This sophisticated complication requires no manual correction until the year 2100, a testament to Patek Philippe's mastery of mechanical ingenuity.

Adding to its exclusivity, the reference 3990P-010 was produced in extremely limited numbers. While total production figures for the diamond-set 3990 remain unpublished by Patek Philippe, industry sources suggest that examples in platinum with baguette-cut diamond bezel and dial markers are significantly rarer than their yellow or white gold counterparts. The reference 3990P-010 stands as one of the most elusive and covetable modern Patek Philippe complications—a true grail for the discerning collector who demands both technical excellence and understated artistry.
