Lot Essay

The Patek Philippe Nautilus reference 5980 made its debut at the Basel Fair in 2006, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the legendary Nautilus ref. 3700⁄1, which was first created by Gérald Genta. Designed to be the first chronograph in the Nautilus family, the reference 5980 maintained the collection's distinctive design language while adding a complication that seemed both natural and necessary for a high-end sports watch.

The lot is consigned by a notable private collector, whose collection reflects a deep appreciation for the finest modern Patek Philippe wristwatches.

The model is distinguished by its instantly identifiable 'bull's-eye' chronograph register, which was initially used in reference 5960. This creative display creates remarkable legibility and visual balance by focusing the minutes on the outer ring and the chronograph hours in the inner register. Patek Philippe's fully in-house automatic chronograph movement, calibre 28-520 C, powers the timepiece, highlighting the company's technical prowess and solidifying the reference 5980 as one of the most significant contemporary Nautilus models.
