Lot Essay

When Reference 565 was first released in 1938, it brought with it a number of novel and timeless features that have since solidified its position as a collector's favorite. Chief among these is its robust two-piece waterproof case with screw-down back, manufactured by Taubert, a specialist in waterproof cases since the late 19th century. Taubert solidified Patek Philippe's reputation for technical prowess by providing a sizable number of these cases, including the renowned chronograph reference 1463.

Reference 565, which was produced until 1952, was designed for customers who were becoming more interested in outdoor and athletic activities. The model, which was waterproof due to its screw-down caseback, was mainly available with subsidiary seconds and, much less frequently, with center seconds, such as the present timepiece. Several calibres were used during its production: the calibre 12'''120 was used in early first-series examples, the Victorin Piguet indirect centre-seconds calibre 12-120 SC, such as the present timepiece, was introduced in 1939, and starting in 1950, a second series that included the calibre 12'''400 and the new calibre 27 SC was introduced.

According to research, only around 19 first-series stainless steel examples with sweep centre seconds were produced, rendering this watch exceptionally rare. Its desirability is further enhanced by the presence of a Gay Frères bracelet, the legendary maker responsible for bracelets of iconic models such as early Patek Philippe Nautilus' reference 3700 and the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak reference 5402. The movement, is stamped 'PXP', signifying that the watch was first sold to the American market and adding yet another fascinating level of historical significance.
