Lot Essay

Reference 4467 is a landmark model for Rolex collectors, as it represents the very first iteration of the Datejust. Introduced in 1945 to commemorate the brand’s 40th anniversary, it marked a defining moment in modern wristwatch history. To highlight the significance Rolex placed on this ground-breaking release, the first 100 pieces were individually numbered and put up for sale through an ad in the local newspaper 'Tribune de Genève'.

Its rounded oyster case architecture and the addition of a date aperture at three o'clock set it apart from the 'Big Bubble Back' models of the time. The world's first self-winding chronometer wristwatch with an automatically changing date function was Reference 4467, this invention would forever alter the course of wristwatch design.

The reference's debut featured a delicately fluted bezel and the now-iconic 'Jubilee' bracelet, which was made especially for this anniversary model, further enhancing its historical significance. These distinguishing characteristics establish reference 4467 as one of the most important and influential wristwatches ever made, in addition to being the ancestor of the Datejust family.
