Lot Essay

The present timepiece is a superb and highly sought-after example of the Rolex Daytona reference 6265, distinguished by its coveted silver dial with contrasting black subsidiary registers and the characteristic oversized red 'Daytona' signature above the hour totaliser. This vivid red accent, giving rise to the celebrated 'Big Red' designation, gives the dial a dynamic sense of balance and sportiness, and has become one of the most recognisable features among vintage Daytona models.

The Rolex Daytona, one of the most recognizable chronographs in watchmaking, has established a lasting reputation in the world of collecting. The model has been manufactured in a wide range of dial, case, and movement variations over the years, each of which reflects Rolex's ongoing quest for technological advancement while maintaining a strong and unified design identity.

Reference 6265
Introduced in the early 1970s and produced until 1987, reference 6265 is the sister model to reference 6263. The 6265 has a metal tachymeter bezel instead of an acrylic insert, which is the main difference between the two. The model is powered by the manually wound Valjoux calibre 727, which replaced the previous calibre 722-1, and is made of stainless steel as well as 14K and 18K gold.

Reference 6265, which has the 'Oyster' designation on the dial, is a significant development in the Daytona lineage. It has an enlarged winding crown, a screw-down caseback, and screw-down chronograph pushers, all of which contribute to better water resistance and a more durable, sporty character.
