Lot Essay

Inspired by the celebrated Flamingo brooch created in 1940 by Jeanne Toussaint for Cartier, and set with stones originally from the collection of Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor, this brooch captures the spirit and distinctive design of the original. Following the 1987 sale of her jewellery collection and the renewed interest in the design, Cartier produced a small number of flamingo brooches on a bespoke basis for private clients. Reinterpreted in the 1980s, it reflects the enduring appeal of one of the most iconic jewels of the twentieth century.
The design retains the bold use of colour and the stylised form of the original, with gemstones arranged to evoke the elegance and movement of a flamingo.
