Lot Essay

This pair of trompe l'oeils depict prints and paintings displayed alongside a selection of objects: a pistol, a pocket watch, an artist's palette, sheet music, a record and a pochette. In the first of the pair, the prints can be identified as The Death of Lucretia, after a composition by Hans von Aachen (1552-1615), one impression of which is found at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (inv. no. RP-P-OB-5168). The other print, also found at the Rijksmuseum (inv. no. RP-P-OB-59.214), is The Holy Family with Saint John the Baptist by Cornelis Schut I (1597-1655). The Shut print includes an inscription 'Joannes de Salettes pinxit', which may, in fact, be the signature of the artist who painted this trompe l'oeil.
