Consigned by the family of the original owner, the Christie's is honored to offer a fresh to market and supremely rare Patek Philippe Calatrava reference 530 in stainless steel with a silvered 'beige' dial.
Reference 530
Manufactured for a notably short and early production beginning in 1937 and ceasing by 1944, it is believed that only 140 reference 530 timepieces were manufactured in total, the vast majority cased in yellow gold. As a result, specimens in stainless steel are exceptionally rare and highly coveted, representing some of the most elusive Patek Philippe Calatrava timepieces ever made.
Intriguingly, the reference 530 was offered in both chronograph and time-only configurations. The chronograph variant is often discussed alongside the famed reference 130; however, the 530 stands apart as its “big brother,” boasting an extraordinary 36.5 millimeters in diameter. The time-only version, such as the present watch, shares aesthetic lineage with the more commonly encountered reference 570, yet distinguishes itself through its larger proportions—measuring approximately 1.5 millimeters larger—and by featuring a beautiful and seldom-seen concave bezel rather than a flat one, lending the watch added elegance, depth, and visual refinement.
The present lot is preserved in very good condition, showcasing a sharp and well-defined case with contrasting finishes. Its silvered “beige” dial is further elevated by a hard enamel, elongated Patek Philippe signature and track, complemented by long and elegant pencil hands and applied indices at 3, 9, and 12 o’clock. Exceptionally rare, historically important, and aesthetically compelling, this stainless steel reference 530 represents a wonderful and highly prized timepiece for the astute collector.
