Lot Essay

Fresh to market and from the family of the original owner, the present Patek Philippe reference 3444 is a highly rare and desirable early automatic Calatrava timepiece with a striking dial that has evenly aged to a champagne color. It's believed that approximately only 200 examples were manufactured of the reference in yellow gold, with far fewer surfacing to the market.

Enhancing the watch and chosen by the original owner is its eye-catching and iconic Zelman & Friedman 'double Cuban link' bracelet which adds substantial weight, comfort, and a sporty-chic element to the wristwatch. Manufactured from 14k gold, the bracelet alone which is also stamped weighs an impressive 73.51 grams.

Powering the timepiece is Patek Philippe's second automatic caliber ever created, the revered 27-460. As the timepiece is an early iteration of the Maison's automatic wristwatch, it has an original forged ‘PP’ crown, a collector-desired feature. The 'waterproof' screwback case was skillfully manufactured by Wenger (Case key 1) and has with beautiful steps in the bezel and lugs. Another beautiful feature of the reference 3444 are the applied 'coffin' indices in yellow gold.

Zelman & Friedman
Established in 1951, Zelman & Friedman (Z&F) was a New York City-based jewelry company who specialized in manufacturing Florentine finish, curb link, and woven gold chains. Their pieces are generally stamped "14K Z&F" or just "Z&F," and often collaborated with high-end retailers such as Tiffany & Co. in their earlier years.
