Lot Essay
Fresh to market and from the family of the original owner, the present Calatrava reference 2573⁄1 features an extremely rare “Cartier” signature on the dial. Furthermore, the case has Cartier inventory numbers engraved on the back of one of the lugs, and is further enhanced with its striking 18k gold bracelet.
The Reference 2573
Introduced in the late 1950s, the reference 2573—part of Patek Philippe’s celebrated Calatrava family—embodies the Maison’s post-war pursuit of refined, understated elegance. Production is understood to have begun circa 1957–1958 and continued only for a relatively short period into the 1960s, underscoring the reference’s relative scarcity and desirability among collectors.
Housed in a classic 33 mm. case—perfectly proportioned for mid-century tastes—the model is distinguished by its elegant, down-curving lugs that hug the wrist with remarkable grace. The silvered dial is executed with exceptional refinement, its hour markers delicately engraved to reveal the gold beneath, a technique that lends both depth and quiet brilliance—an expression of chic and fashionable elegance.
