Lot Essay

The Reference 3900⁄1
The Patek Philippe Nautilus Ref. 3900⁄1 is a very rare and seldom-seen member of the celebrated Nautilus family, produced for only a brief period from 1984 to 1989. Introduced during a time when Patek Philippe was expanding the iconic Nautilus line into more compact and versatile formats, the reference 3900⁄1 offered the unmistakable Gérald Genta–designed porthole aesthetic in an elegant smaller case size intended for a refined, unisex or ladies’ clientele. Its short production span and limited visibility on the market today make it an especially appealing proposition for collectors seeking the more elusive references within the Nautilus lineage.

Retaining all of the defining characteristics of the model—integrated bracelet, rounded octagonal bezel, and horizontally ribbed dial—the reference 3900⁄1 distills the sporty sophistication of the Nautilus into a highly wearable and discreet format. Unlike its larger automatic counterparts, the watch is powered by the ultra-thin quartz caliber E19C, a reliable and finely finished movement that allowed Patek Philippe to preserve the model’s slender proportions while meeting the practical demands of daily wear.

As one of the rarer early Nautilus references and among the few produced in a smaller quartz-powered configuration, the reference 3900⁄1 represents an increasingly collectible chapter in Patek Philippe’s iconic sports watch history—combining 1980s/ elegance, understated luxury, and genuine rarity in equal measure.
