Lot Essay

The Reference 2424 'Flame'
Amongst the most charismatic and seldom-seen designs of vintage Patek Philippe, the reference 2424 stands apart for its bold yet refined aesthetic, distinguished by an imposing cushion-shaped case accented with the highly sculptural and much-admired “flamme” lugs from which it derives its evocative nickname. Manufactured between circa 1946 to 1952, it is both elegant and visually striking as the model embodies a harmonious balance between mid-century modernity and classical Genevan craftsmanship. The present example is rendered in exceptionally rare 18k pink gold—an alluring metal seldom encountered for this reference, as the majority of known examples were produced in yellow gold—greatly enhancing its desirability among discerning collectors. Its beautifully executed case was manufactured by Ponti, Gennari & Cie., as confirmed by the Geneva Key 26 maker’s mark, and remains well-preserved with crisp and defined hallmarks that attest to its careful preservation over time. A study in form, rarity, and elegance, the reference 2424 with flame lugs represents one of the most distinctive expressions of Patek Philippe’s post-war wristwatch design.
