CHINE

The present snuff bottle is carved from finely polished white jade of creamy tone and smooth texture. Of flattened rectangular form with rounded corners, it is mounted with gilded wire inlay and surmounted by a stopper set with a pink tourmaline finial. The body is richly decorated with scrolling floral motifs, the blossoms centred with blue, green, and pink hardstones, while delicate gilt wire bands finely chased with beaded decoration further enliven the surface. The floral imagery conveys auspicious associations of prosperity and flourishing vitality.
