Sigmund Freud (1856-1939)
Autograph letter signed ('Freud') to an unidentified colleague ('Geehrter Herr Kollege'), Berggasse 19, Vienna, 26 June [19]10.
In German. One page, 275 x 215mm, on paper with Freud's printed address. Framed (46 x 39cm) and mounted.

On the treatment of stuttering, and his high prices for English-speaking patients. It is not Freud himself but his colleague Wilhelm Stekel who has reported positive results in treating stuttering through psychoanalysis. Stekel would undoubtedly be happy to taken on the correspondent's 13-year old stutterer as a patient, provided he was proficient in German. Freud himself does accept English-speaking patients, 'but at high prices'.

'It is not I but my student Dr. W. Stekel ... who has reported good results in the treatment of stuttering ... The treatment method was psychoanalytic, the essence of which can be described in a few sentences, but about which you will find further information in my writings and those of my students.
Dr. Stekel would certainly be happy to take on the 13-year-old stutterer as a patient, but the patient would have to be proficient in German. He will inform you of his conditions upon request. I do accept English-speaking patients, but at high prices ...'

Dr Wilhelm Stekel (1868-1940), one of Freud's early and most distinguished disciples, is said to have analysed over 10,000 patients, although after 1912 his relationship with Freud became more distant. He wrote in 1908 about his successful treatment of a rabbi who suffered with a stutter: this was in fact the first Jewish cleric known to have undergone analysis.
