Details
VASI, Giuseppe Agostino (1710-1782)
Delle Magnificenze di Roma Antica e Moderna... Rome: Chracas and others, 1747-1761 [but c.1770s]
An exceptional copy of the second edition of Vasi's masterpiece, his most ambitious work, with over 200 superb views of Rome, this copy extra illustrated with many additional plates; all in fine impressions on thick paper with excellent margins. Vasi first published his masterwork, Delle Magnificenze di Roma from 1747 to 1761. The ten volumes are typologically organised, each volume focussing on a particular aspect of Rome: Book I, Gates and Walls; Book II, Piazze; Book III, Major Churches and Basilicas; Book IV, Palazzi and Streets; Book V, the Tiber and its Bridges; Book VI, Parish Churches; Book VII, Monasteries; Book VIII, Convents; Book IX, Colleges and Hospitals; Book X, Villas and Gardens. Vasi begins the Magnificenze by leading the viewer on a virtual tour around the city’s perimeter depicting in turn the gates and walls of the city. His approach was innovative in documenting the city focusing quite literally on the space in between the city’s great monuments as well as the monuments themselves, and particularly in including antique elements that act as a foil for the contemporary city. This example of the second edition retains the uncancelled imprint on the title, but is without Vasi’s sonnet to the ‘Infante D. Filippo’ which is only found in the first edition. It has a general half-title referring to the full text as published in 'dieci libri' as well as an altered address to the reader in the first volume. It is extra illustrated with many plates taken from Vasi’s other works that have been placed in the text at the relevant position. RIBA 3389.
10 parts in 5 volumes, oblong quarto (413 x 277mm). Half-title in vol. I, engraved vignettes on each title, large engraved historiated initials, engraved frontispiece, 200 numbered engraved plates, numerous small text engravings, list of subscribers in book 10, extra illustrated with a further 23 plates (some occasional spotting and light browning, occasional minor marginal water-stains). Contemporary Italian decorated paper over boards, vol. numbers gilt on spine and manuscript and printed on lower edges, all edges speckled red. Provenance: Pasolini (modern bookplate on fly-leaf).
