Lot Essay

This is an early, delicately etched portrait of Rembrandt's mother, seen in profile. Curiously, this print and Sheet of Studies: Head of the Artist, a Beggar Couple, Heads of an Old Man and Old Woman, etc. (see lot 127), were both in the collection of the Ducs d'Arenberg, and were offered in one lot at Christie's, London, on 14 July 1902. After 124 years, mother and son come together again, in these same rooms.
