Lot Essay
Compare the mottled russet and yellow jade conical bowl dated to the Song dynasty of taller, less compressed form and lacking mask handles, in the Palace Museum, Beijing (https://intl.dpm.org.cn/Jade/27801.html). The rather delicate conical form, standing on a small foot, appears to have been inspired by contemporaneous silver and ceramic wares. See, for example, the silver conical bowl in the Pengzhou Municipal Museum, illustrated in Song Yun, ed., Sichuan jiaocang wenwu ji zuo (Selected relics from the Sichuan hoards), Beijing, 2006, pl. 182; and the Longquan celadon conical bowl recovered from the Sinan wreck off the coast of Korea, included in the Special Exhibition of Cultural Relics Found off the Sinan Coast, National Museum of Korea, Seoul, 1977, pl. 19.
