Lot Essay

Beautifully modeled and richly dressed, these court ladies exhibit a rare combination of cobalt-blue with both green, cream, and amber glazes. One lady clasps a luxurious feather fan at her chest while the other lady elegantly positions herself with her hand at her hip. A similarly dressed figure, with the same face and coiffure in the Shaanxi Provincial Museum is illustrated in Zhongguo taoci quanji - 7 - Tang sancai, Shanghai, 1983, no. 55. A rare pair of blue and sancai-glazed pottery figures of court ladies, formerly in the Max N. Berry Collections was sold at Christie’s New York, 27 March 2026, lot 692.
