Lot Essay

I use 12-string electric guitars a lot, and these models are great because the pickups are more rock orientated, adding a darker sound than you might get on other 12-string models. I've been using these guitars for so long that I'm always surprised at how uncommon they are.
JOHNNY MARR, MARR’S GUITARS, 2023

Marr acquired three 1960s Gibson ES-335 12-strings in Sunburst, Cherry and a custom black finish via legendary guitar tech and sometime guitar dealer Alan Rogan in the mid to late 1980s. Marr used the black 335 12-string to record the shimmering lead single ‘Hi Hello’ on his third solo studio album Call The Comet. Released ahead of the album on 11 May 2018, the haunting melody conjured elements of Marr’s Smiths-era sound. ‘Hi Hello’ is a title that I've had for a while, Marr told Uncut magazine in 2018. When I did the string part, I was aware that it sounded like... The Smiths. I don't do that very often. I'm usually hellbent on trying not to repeat myself. But if, after 30-odd years, I play a phrase that reminds me of one of my old songs, I'm not going to flagellate myself over it. The 12-string features in the official music video for ‘Hi Hello’, which saw Marr strumming the guitar from the bandstand at Broadfield Park in Rochdale. Like the song, the video needed to be natural, Marr told Billboard in 2018. So we went to the park, I took my guitar and it all came together on a nice Spring morning.
