This is an example of a sheet of uncut small tanzaku prints, possibly produced as a publisher’s sample or as a distribution sheet before the individual prints were separated and the entire stock sold. Particularly striking is the consistency of the color palette across the sheet. Although the same restrained range of colors unifies the compositions, each print creates a distinctly different atmosphere, demonstrating how Hiroshige could achieve remarkable variations in mood and season through subtle shifts in composition, light, and color.
