Lot Essay

The exterior is decorated with eight horses, all rendered in different colours and postures, and further decorated with two horses and a groom on the interior. The base is inscribed with a six-character Chenghua apocryphal mark. The decoration on the current bowl is extremely fine and painterly.

Compare to a similar Kangxi bowl of similar form, size, composition and Chenghua apocryphal mark, in the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco, accession number: B60P1727 (fig.1). Compare also a Kangxi blue and white bowl with similar motifs, but of smaller size (16 cm.), and decorated with only one horse and a groom on the interior, in the Victoria and Albert Museum Collection, accession number: CIRC.346-1931.
