The pear-shaped vase has a slightly flaring neck flanked by two curved strap handles with a raised ridge, resting on a thick splayed foot. The vase is covered overall with an elegant pale sky-blue glaze to imitate the Ru ware.
The shape of this vase is inspired by bronze prototypes from the Han dynasty, such as a bronze double-handled vase illustrated in Ningshou jiangu, vol.9, no.7, a catalogue of the imperial collection of archaic bronzes during the Qianlong period, reflecting the Emperor’s keen interests in archaism (fig. 1).
Compare to a similar Yongzheng example from the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Monochrome Porcelain, Hong Kong, 1999, no.212. For Qianlong comparables, see a Ru-type glazed example from the Meiyintang Collection, recorded in Chinese Ceramics from the Meiyintang Collection, Vol. 4, London, 2010, no. 1791; and two covered in tea-dust glaze, one in the Tokyo National Museum, illustrated in Oriental Ceramics, Vol.1, Japan, 1982, no.168, and the other in the Baur Collection, illustrated in Chinese Ceramics in the Baur Collection, Vol.2, Geneva, 1999, no. 296.
