Lot Essay

The dish is finely decorated on the interior with a seated lady holding a ruyi sceptre beside four boys at play, the everted rim is decorated with shaped panels enclosing floral sprays.

Dishes of this type often depict scenes of domestic life featuring a young mother looking after her children. The present dish, however, stands out for its superb enamelling and fine condition. For similar examples, refer to a group illustrated in Catalogue of the Morgan Collection of Chinese Porcelain, New York, 1907, p.43; and a pair illustrated by Regina Krahl, Chinese Ceramics from the Meiyintang Collection, vol. II, London, 1994, no. 969.
