Lot Essay

This finely modelled figure represents an emaciated Buddha seated on a cushion of leaves, with his wrists crossed resting on a raised left knee, while his right leg is tucked beneath. His body is loosely draped in a robe that reveals his ribs and leaves his arms and legs bare. The base is incised with a character yu, and the back impressed with a square seal mark Sunjiang Shanren.

Sunjiang is a section of waterway in Quanzhou, Fujian, and the Dehua Kiln region historically fell under Quanzhou's administrative jurisdiction. For this reason, Sunjiang Shanren has long been regarded as a porcelain craftsman dwelling near Dehua County.

According to research by the Palace Museum, a number of Dehua sculptures impressed with the Sunjiang Shanren mark are also accompanied with a seal reading Chunyu (see Dehua Wares Collected by the Palace Museum I, Beijing, 2016,l p. 34). A Dehua figure of Guanyin bearing these two marks was sold at Christie’s London, 10 November 2015, lot 311.

An epitaph preserved in the Dehua Ceramics Museum, inscribed ‘The Noble Epitaph of Sun Chunyu’, documents that a gentleman known as Sun Chunyu was born in the 7th year of the Tianqi reign (1627) and passed away in the 46th year of the Kangxi reign (1707). He spent his later years in Dehua County. His active years during the late Ming to early Qing period coincides with the style of Dehua works bearing the Sunjiang Shanren and Chunyu marks, leading some scholars to conclude that such marks were the personal seals of Sun Chunyu. The single character yu incised on the interior of the current lot, which is the same character as yu in Sun Chunyu, further supports the research findings by the Palace Museum.

Compare to a Dehua figure of Damo in the Palace Museum, Beijing, impressed with a Sunjiang Shanren mark and illustrated in Dehua Wares Collected by the Palace Museum I, Beijing, 2016, no.4 (fig. 1).
