Lot Essay
Of globular shape, the jar has a flat top with small circular opening, the exterior is finely painted with a continuous begonia scroll depicting delicate blooms on a slender stem with curly leaves and tendrils, all between bands of petal panels. The foot is decorated with florettes.
The current jar with a flat inverted rim is highly unusual in shape and attractively decorated with a rare begonia scroll painted in rich tones of cobalt blue. A jar of the same form and design is in the Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated in Catalogue of the Special Exhibition of Selected Hsüan-te Imperial Porcelains of the Ming Dynasty, Taipei, 1998, no.10 (fig. 1).
Compare also to a Xuande jar painted with prunus motifs, housed in the National Palace Museum, Taipei and illustrated in Ming Xuande Ciqi Tezhan Mulu, Taipei, 1980, no. 22; and one decorated with loquat, peach and crab apple, sold at Christie’s New York, 19 September 2025, lot 1011.
