Lot Essay

The vase is potted with a rounded body, tapering to a slightly splayed foot, delicately and brightly painted with rectangular panels of ladies in the garden, alternating with pomegranate-shaped cartouches of idyllic landscapes, above leaf-shaped cartouches of poems.

It is rare to find vases decorated with an iron-red chrysanthemum scroll ground like the current vase. Compare a Kangxi vase of same shape and size (43.2 cm.) in the Victoria and Albert Museum Collection, which is similarly decorated with a red chrysanthemum ground, but painted with birds and flowers in the cartouches, accession number 789-1883.
