Lot Essay

The present form of ink cake is known in both black and vermillion, intricately moulded on one side with two dragons emerging from crashing waves, and on the reverse with a poem composed by the Qianlong Emperor. The ink cake is further inscribed with two inscriptions: Suichu tang cangmo (Ink cake from the Hall of Idyllic Life) and da qing Qianlong nian zhi (made in the Qianlong reign of the Great Qing Dynasty). A closely related vermilion ink cake of virtually identical design, differing primarily in the placement of these two inscriptions along the reverse border rather than on the edges, is in the collection of Palace Museum, Taipei, collection no.: zhongwen000245N (fig. 1).
