Lot Essay

Images from Ubac’s Penthesilee series first appeared in Minotaure 10, in 1937. To create these fantastical images, Ubac continually reworked imagery related to the classical myth of the slain Amazon queen, Penthesilea. For Ubac, she was a metaphor for a perpetual cycle of ruin and rebirth.
