Lot Essay

The present alms bowl is finely potted with deep rounded sides rising from a flat base. It is covered overall with a white glaze stopping above the foot to reveal the fine, dense white body. Compare a Sui-dynasty white-glazed alms bowl in the collection of the Shaanxi History Museum, which is closely comparable in the form, body, thin and even glaze, and the glaze stopping short of the base, see Complete Collection of Ceramic Art Unearthed in China, vol. 15: Shaanxi, Beijing, 2008, p. 18, no. 18. A similar example was also found in the Collection of the Shaanxi History Museum, which dated to Sui Dynasty, illustrated in Compendium of Ceramics, vol. 37, Tokyo, 1970, p. 96, pl. no. 24.
