Lot Essay

"Blue with Red is the third woodcut Diebenkorn made in Kyoto. Kathan Brown said the print, based on a drawing created for the project, was more problematic for the artist than the projects made during his 1983 stay, Ochre (cat. no. 288) and Blue (cat. no. 289). 'When we first saw it, it wasn't holding together, Dick said; it had the wrong blue, and lots of other things were wrong with it.' The project progressed after he added blocks. 'That got him started about how to hold the pentimenti,' Brown continued. The print reached completion 'after ten days of concentrated effort.'
