Cloudy Mountains are among the most enduring subjects in the history of Chinese paintings, embodying a long tradition shaped by continual transmission and reinvention. Evolving through the interpretations of successive generations of masters, the genre flourished during the Song and Yuan dynasties, from the landscapes pioneered by Mi Fu and Mi Youren to the innovations of masters such as Gao Kegong and Fang Congyi. In the modern era, Zhang Daqian further revitalized this tradition, infusing it with a distinct contemporary sensibility.
Secluded Dwelling in the Hills was painted in 1942, during Zhang Daqian’s formative Dunhuang years, when his study of the ancient masters was reaching maturity. Viewed alongside Fang Congyi’s Cloudy Mountains and Autumn Landscape in the collection of the National Palace Museum (Fig. 1,2), the present work reveals affinities in both brushwork and composition. Zhang’s inscription reflects on how generations of painters transformed inherited traditions into distinct artistic languages, while emphasizing expressive brushwork and personal inspiration over literal representation. A later colophon by Pu Ru, dated 1957, praises Zhang’s “extraordinary brushwork” and “majestic spirit,” underscoring the painting’s artistic accomplishment.
