Lot Essay

This Manjushri illustrates a confluence of styles from Kashmir, West Tibet and Nepal. The brassy finish and the incised wavy stripes and stippled designs appear on two eleventh century Kashmir sculptures (HAR 61438; U. von Schroeder, Indo-Tibetan Bronzes, 1981, p 20, no 20D). The beaded rosette of the armbands and anklets is also evident on a Bhairavi from Himachal Pradesh (ibid, p. 148, no. 26A), as well as Nepalese casts within their jewelry schema (see ibid, p. 93, no. 93E and p. 95, no. 95A).
