Lot Essay

At the center of this nineteenth-century Nepalese paubha stands Shristhikantha Lokeshvara, also revered in Newar culture as Rato Macchendranath. While typical paubhas present stylized templates, this piece stands out as an actual representation of the ritual statue worshiped in Nepal. It is an exceptionally rare record of the cult image itself. Compare the image to another of the deity (H. Kreijger, Kathmandu Valley Painting: The Jucker Collection, Boston, 1999, p. 76, no. 25).
