Lot Essay

The present drawing is a study for Graham Sutherland's painting Entrance to a Lane (Tate, London). Sutherland later identified the location on which the painting is based as a lane on the west bank of Sandy Haven, off the Milford Haven estuary in south-west Wales, an area of Pembrokeshire that Sutherland visited regularly between 1934 and 1946.
