Lot Essay

The present work belongs to Hoyland’s celebrated series of ‘pink’ paintings, inspired by the distinctive light and landscape of Nevada. In 1970, Hoyland was living in the United States and was in a relationship with the jazz singer, Eloise Laws. While accompanying her on tour in Las Vegas, in the early mornings, he would drive out into the desert, where the vivid colours and expansive atmosphere of the landscape informed a number of striking compositions.
