This drawing is a preparatory study for Patrick Caulfield's celebrated Nude with Books, 1968, offering a fascinating insight into the development of one of the artist's most recognisable early paintings. Commissioned in 1967 for Michael Chow's newly opened Kensington restaurant, the finished painting was famously paid for in restaurant credit, prompting Caulfield to remark that he and his friends would "eat his way through the painting".
