Lot Essay

Tiles of similar design to these can be found in the Rüstem Pasha Mosque, built by Mimar Sinan and completed in 1563. They share the same cobalt-blue ground, narrow red borders, and white flowers with bole-red and green accents. A single tile matching those found in the Rüstem Pasha Mosque was sold at Sotheby’s London, 13 October 2004, lot 187.

Our tiles also closely resemble those found in the Eyüp Sultan tomb. Although completed between 1798-99, the Eyüp tiles date from much earlier and were incorporated into the design of the mausoleum to richly embellish the shrine. As the purported final resting place of one of the Prophet’s close companions, the wall of the mausoleum is festooned with Iznik tile panels.
