Lot Essay

Timur entered Baghdad on 21 Shawwal AH 795⁄30 August 1393 AD, by which time the ruler, Sultan Ahmad Jalayir, had already fled. Timur crossed the Tigris in the sultan’s royal barge while his son Miranshah crossed it at a place called Qaryat al-‘Uqab (for a translation of this episode, see Cherefeddin Ali (Sharaf al-Din ‘Ali Yazdi), The History of Timur Bec, 2 vols., London 1723, vol.1, p.433).
