Lot Essay
This posthumous portrait of Raja Sidh Sen (r.1684-1727) was painted by Mohammadi who was a pupil of Sajnu at Mandi. Mohammadi (Mohammad Bax) is very close to Sajnu in style (Goswamy and Fischer, Pahari Masters, New Delhi, 2009, p.356) and this is one of very few paintings that can be securely tied to the artist. A painting dated 1854 and signed Mohammadi is in the Princeton University Art Museum (2022-41; formerly sold Bonhams, New York, 19 March 2018, lot 3106) and another dated 1855 was with Rob Dean Art (Exhibited 'Mandi Masters - Artists at the Court of Mandi', Asian Art in London, 1 - 9 November 2018). Further works attributed to him are in the in the San Diego Museum of Art (1990.1139), Government Museum, Chandigarh (Goswamy and Fischer, op.cit., no.154, pp.356-57) and with Francesca Galloway (Summer Exhibition, 2025).
