Some countries prohibit or restrict the purchase and/or import of Iranian-origin property. Bidders must familiarise themselves with any laws or shipping restrictions that apply to them before bidding on these lots. For example, the USA prohibits dealings in and import of Iranian-origin “works of conventional craftsmanship” (such as carpets, textiles, decorative objects, and scientific instruments) without an appropriate licence. Christie’s has a general OFAC licence which, subject to compliance with certain conditions, would enable a buyer to import certain non-carpet lots of this type into the USA. If you intend to use Christie’s licence, please contact us for further information before you bid. Please note that buyers wishing to import Persian rugs or carpets into the USA will need to apply for their own OFAC licence for this activity.

Lot Essay

The knot count measures approximately 10V x 8H per cm. sq.

The city of Tabriz is one of the most renowned weaving centers in Persia. Located close to Heriz it was a major commercial center during the 19th century and became one of the leading carpet producing cities responsible for manufacturing carpets for both the domestic and western markets.

The design of the present carpet, comprising a series of concentric lobed, scalloped medallions, subtly woven in a palette of shimmering pastel colours, is framed by a turtle-palmette border flanked by multiple decorative guard stripes. While palace-sized silk carpets are rare and are not frequently seen on the market, an impressive silk Heriz carpet was sold in these Rooms, 5 April 2011, lot 200, and a slightly smaller Tabriz carpet with a citrine-yellow field was with Eberhart Herrmann, Von Uschak Bis Yarkand Seltene Orienteppiche Aus Vier Jahrhunderten, Munich, 1983, pp. 88 & 106, no. 63.
