Faithful to Vianney Halter's unmistakable design language, the present Trio Grande Date draws heavily on the nautical inspirations that define many of his creations. The bezel evokes the appearance of a ship's porthole, while the riveted crown reinforces the industrial, marine-inspired aesthetic. In keeping with Halter's philosophy of mechanical transparency, the watch is fitted with his patented mysterious mass winding system. Unlike a conventional automatic rotor, the oscillating weight is concealed beneath a peripheral ring, creating the illusion of a manually wound movement while allowing an uninterrupted view of the calibre through the sapphire crystal caseback. Reportedly, only 10 examples in white gold were ever produced, making the present timepiece one of the rarest creations from Vianney Halter's already highly exclusive production.
The origins of the Trio date back to the late 1990s, when Halter conceived a highly original wristwatch featuring three separate portholes, hence the name, for the hours and minutes, running seconds, and date. Although this first iteration remained at the prototype stage, the concept laid the foundations for the present model. In the early 2000s, Halter revisited the design, introducing a large double-disc date that required the addition of a fourth porthole while significantly enhancing the watch's practicality.
Far more than a simple enlargement of the date display, Halter completely re-engineered the movement to incorporate an ingenious gear system allowing rapid date adjustment directly via the crown. The time-setting and date-setting mechanisms operate entirely independently, ensuring that adjusting one function has no effect on the other. With the crown in its neutral position, the date advances automatically at midnight, while a day/night indicator on the main dial prevents any accidental date change at noon. This thoughtful mechanical solution perfectly illustrates Vianney Halter's ability to combine technical innovation with intuitive functionality, reinforcing the Trio Grande Date as one of the most original creations of contemporary independent watchmaking.
