Introduced in 2011, reference 5216 succeeded the legendary reference 5016, which, upon its launch in 1993, was Patek Philippe's most complicated serially produced wristwatch. Bringing together a minute repeater, tourbillon, perpetual calendar with retrograde date and moon phases, reference 5216 represents an extraordinary concentration of some of the manufacture's most prestigious complications.
Despite the exceptional complexity of the watch, Patek Philippe succeeded in keeping the specially developed in-house calibre R TO 27 PS QR to a remarkably compact diameter of only 28 mm. In accordance with the manufacture's longstanding philosophy, the tourbillon remains concealed from the dial side, protecting its delicate lubricants from prolonged exposure to light. Its presence is discreetly revealed only by the word 'TOURBILLON' on the dial, an understated indication of the formidable mechanism within.
In a tradition recalling Patek Philippe's observatory-grade pocket watches of the early twentieth century, the individual movement number is subtly engraved beneath the moon-phase aperture. The extraordinary construction and finishing of the tourbillon can instead be admired through the sapphire crystal caseback, including its distinctively shaped carriage reminiscent of a watchmaker's tool. The 39.5 mm case furthermore provides a generous resonating volume for the minute repeater, contributing to the remarkable clarity and resonance of its chimes.
Aesthetically, reference 5216 draws inspiration from some of the purest designs in Patek Philippe's history. Its restrained case recalls the timeless lines of early Calatrava references such as the legendary reference 96, reinterpreted in larger proportions to accommodate its extraordinary mechanical complexity. The elegant silvered dial beautifully complements the pink gold case, while the applied pink gold hour markers and finely balanced indications lend the watch a remarkably classical appearance. The result is a timepiece of exceptional mechanical complexity concealed within an elegantly understated exterior, perfectly embodying Patek Philippe's philosophy of discreet grand complication watchmaking.
