Lot Essay
Among the ten watches created by A. Lange & Söhne to commemorate 25 years of the Lange 1, the Grand Lange 1 Moon Phase '25th Anniversary' was the second to be unveiled, appearing in February 2019. Produced in an edition of just 25 pieces, it combines the larger proportions of the Grand Lange 1 with one of the manufacture's most poetic complications, presented in the distinctive blue and silver aesthetic reserved for the anniversary collection.
The 41 mm. white gold case surrounds a solid silver dial finished in argenté, its monochromatic appearance enlivened by deep blue printing, blued steel hands and blue numerals within the signature outsize date. Dominating the dial is the unusually generous moon-phase indication, integrated within the hours and minutes subdial. Measuring 14.3 mm in diameter, the display provides an expansive stage for the white gold lunar disc, whose stars are individually engraved by hand. Far more than a decorative feature, the moon-phase indication demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of the Saxon manufacture. Driven by the manually wound calibre L095.3, its gearing reproduces the lunar cycle with an accuracy of 99.998 per cent. Provided the movement continues to run uninterrupted, a correction of just one day would theoretically be required only after 122.6 years.
The anniversary character extends to the movement itself, visible beneath the sapphire crystal caseback. Specially executed decorative details distinguish the calibre from the standard model, most notably the hand-engraved intermediate-wheel cock, whose recessed ornamentation is filled with blue lacquer. Completing the tribute is a relief engraving of Lange's celebrated outsize date showing '25', a recurring signature found throughout the ten anniversary editions.
