Lot Essay
Combining the unmistakable architecture of the Lange 1 with one of watchmaking's most evocative astronomical indications, the Lange 1 Moon Phase has long offered a particularly elegant interpretation of A. Lange & Söhne's signature design. In July 2019, the model was chosen as the sixth instalment in the manufacture's '25th Anniversary' series, with just 25 examples produced in white gold.
The moon phase is seamlessly incorporated into the subsidiary seconds display, allowing the complication to become an integral part of the Lange 1's celebrated asymmetrical composition. Behind its apparent simplicity lies considerable mechanical precision. The manually wound calibre L121.3 calculates the lunar cycle with an accuracy of 99.998 per cent. Whereas a conventional moon-phase mechanism may accumulate an error of one day after approximately two and a half years, the Lange display requires the same correction only after 122.6 years, provided the movement continues to run uninterrupted.
Turning the watch over reveals further details created specifically for the anniversary. Visible through the sapphire crystal caseback, the beautifully finished movement features a hand-engraved intermediate-wheel cock, its recessed ornamentation filled in blue to continue the colour scheme of the dial. The cock also bears the recurring emblem of the collection: a relief representation of Lange's famous outsize date displaying '25'.
